Legionary structure
The legionary structure was the organizational system used by the Roman army. It was divided into smaller units for efficiency and discipline. The main unit was the *legion*, typically around 5,000 soldiers, subdivided into cohorts, which were further broken down into centuries of about 80 men each. Each century was led by a centurion. This hierarchical setup allowed for effective command, coordination, and flexibility in battle. It combined both large-group tactics and smaller, manageable units, enabling the Roman army to be both disciplined and adaptable across diverse warfare situations.
