leeches

Leeches are small, segmented worms that belong to the class Hirudinea, often found in freshwater, saltwater, and terrestrial environments. They are known for their ability to attach securely to hosts using specialized suckers, often feeding on blood. Some leeches are used in medicine for bloodletting or to promote healing by improving circulation. They have a simple body structure with a reduced digestive system, and many species are hermaphroditic, having both male and female reproductive organs. Despite their sometimes negative reputation, leeches play a role in ecosystems by helping control populations and recycling nutrients.
