Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy

Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is a genetic condition that primarily affects vision. It usually leads to sudden vision loss in young adult men, although it can occur in women too. This happens due to mutations in the DNA of mitochondria, which are cellular structures that produce energy. These mutations impair the optic nerves, which transmit visual information from the eyes to the brain. While some people may regain partial vision, many remain profoundly affected. There is currently no cure, but research is ongoing to understand the condition and develop potential treatments.
