Layer 2 Switches

A Layer 2 switch is a device used in computer networks to connect multiple devices like computers and printers within a local area. It operates at the data link layer, managing how data packets are forwarded between devices based on their MAC addresses (unique identifiers). When a device sends data, the switch quickly determines the destination device’s address and directs the data specifically to it, rather than broadcasting to all devices. This process improves network efficiency, reduces congestion, and enhances security by keeping the traffic localized. Essentially, a Layer 2 switch intelligently manages data flow within a network segment.
