Latrodectus mactans
Latrodectus mactans, commonly known as the black widow spider, is a venomous spider recognizable by its shiny black body and a distinctive red hourglass shape on its abdomen. Found mainly in North America, it tends to prefer dark, undisturbed areas like woodpiles or sheds. While its bite can cause intense pain and muscle cramps, it is rarely deadly to healthy adults. Black widows generally bite in self-defense if disturbed. The spider plays a role in controlling insect populations, and caution should be exercised when in areas where they are present. Medical attention is recommended if bitten.
