Latin American Informal Settlements
Latin American informal settlements, often called "favelas" or "barrios," are neighborhoods that develop outside official urban planning processes. These areas typically arise due to rapid migration, economic inequality, and lack of affordable housing, leading residents to build homes without formal permits. Though often lacking infrastructure like proper roads, sanitation, and public services, many of these communities are vibrant, resourceful, and culturally rich. Over time, some informal settlements formalize through government programs, while others continue to face challenges related to poverty, safety, and access to services.
