Lateral Ankle Sprain

A lateral ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn, usually from twisting or rolling the ankle unexpectedly. This injury often happens during activities that involve sudden changes in direction or uneven surfaces. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected ankle. Treatment usually involves rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), and sometimes physical therapy. Most people recover fully, but proper management is important to prevent long-term instability or repetitive sprains.
