laparoscopic nephrectomy

A laparoscopic nephrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a kidney. Instead of a large open incision, the surgeon makes several small cuts around the abdomen. Through these, specialized instruments and a tiny camera called a laparoscope are inserted. The camera sends images to a monitor, guiding the surgeon as they carefully detach the kidney from surrounding tissues. Once freed, the kidney is placed in a bag and removed through one of the small incisions. This approach generally results in less pain, reduced scarring, and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
