Kool Herc's Back to School Jam
Kool Herc's Back to School Jam, held in 1973, is considered a foundational event in hip-hop history. As a pioneering DJ, Kool Herc used two turntables to extend the instrumental sections of records, creating a continuous beat called the "break." This technique allowed dancers, known as breakdancers, to showcase their moves. The event marked one of the first organized gatherings focused on DJing and dancing, helping to foster the emerging hip-hop culture in the Bronx. It demonstrated how music and community engagement could inspire new artistic expressions, laying the groundwork for the global hip-hop movement.
