Kinetoplastida

Kinetoplastida is an order of single-celled, flagellated protozoan organisms characterized by a unique structure called the kinetoplast—a large, DNA-containing granule inside their mitochondria. Many members are parasitic, affecting humans, animals, and plants, with notable species like Trypanosoma and Leishmania. These parasites can cause diseases such as sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis. Kinetoplastids are distinguished by their complex life cycles involving different hosts and environments. Their cellular architecture and genetic makeup make them a significant focus in medicine and biology, particularly in understanding parasite biology and developing treatments.
