Kilmainham Treaty

The Kilmainham Treaty was an agreement reached in 1882 between Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell and the British government, led by Prime Minister William Gladstone. It was a compromise aimed at addressing Irish demands for land reform and political reform. Under the treaty, some Irish prisoners were released, and the government promised to consider land purchase policies favoring Irish tenants. The treaty temporarily eased tensions, fostering hope for improved Irish-British relations, but didn’t resolve all issues. It marked a strategic shift in Irish nationalist efforts towards constitutional and political solutions.
