Khmer Rouge Trials
The Khmer Rouge Trials are a series of legal proceedings held to bring justice for the crimes committed during Cambodia's brutal 1975-1979 regime led by Pol Pot. The regime caused the deaths of approximately 1.7 to 2 million people through genocide, forced labor, and starvation. These trials aim to hold senior leaders accountable, establish historical truth, and promote justice for victims. Conducted by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)—a joint UN-Cambodian effort—the proceedings address issues of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, seeking to balance justice with reconciliation for the nation's healing.
