Khilafat-e-Hind Movement
The Khilafat-e-Hind Movement (1919-1924) was a campaign by Indian Muslims to protect the Ottoman Caliphate, which they viewed as a spiritual authority and symbol of Islamic unity. After World War I, the Ottoman Empire was weakened and faced dismantling by Western powers. Indian Muslims feared losing their religious leadership and sought to defend the Caliphate’s survival. Led by leaders like Maulana Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, the movement aimed to influence British policies and promote Hindu-Muslim unity in resisting colonial rule. Although it ultimately failed to save the Caliphate, it played a significant role in fostering Muslim political consciousness and cooperation with the independence movement.
