Khedivate

The Khedivate was a semi-autonomous administrative division in Egypt established in 1867, under the Ottoman Empire but with significant local authority. It was governed by a khediv, a hereditary ruler who held substantial power, while Egypt technically remained part of the Ottoman Empire. This arrangement allowed Egypt to modernize and develop its own institutions, yet it still recognized Ottoman sovereignty. The Khedivate operated until 1914, when Egypt became a British protectorate, ending the khedivate’s independence.
