Kenya and Uganda Railway
The Kenya and Uganda Railway was a major rail construction project built between 1896 and 1901, connecting the port of Mombasa in Kenya to Lake Victoria in Uganda. Funded by the British colonial government, its goal was to facilitate trade, movement, and control in East Africa. The railway enabled easier transportation of goods and people across the region, boosting economic development. However, its construction involved challenging terrain and significant labor, often relying on Indian workers under harsh conditions. Today, it remains an important transportation route and a symbol of colonial-era infrastructure development in East Africa.
