Kenning

A kenning is a literary device originating from Old Norse poetry, where a compound expression replaces a simple noun, often creatively describing an object or person. Instead of saying "sea," one might say "whale-road" or for "sword," "battle-sweat." These poetic metaphors add richness, imagery, and emphasis, making language more vivid and engaging. Kennings are common in ancient poetry but can also appear in modern literature or storytelling, offering a poetic way to evoke meaning through inventive descriptions.
