Kala-azar
Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is a serious parasitic disease caused by the Leishmania parasite. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected sandflies. The disease affects internal organs like the spleen, liver, and bone marrow, leading to symptoms such as prolonged fever, weight loss, anemia, and swelling of the abdomen. If left untreated, it can be fatal. Kala-azar is common in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. Prevention involves controlling sandfly populations and using protective measures like bed nets. Effective treatments are available, especially when diagnosed early.
