Joseph Strauss

Joseph Strauss was an American bridge engineer, best known for his role as the chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge, which spans the Golden Gate Strait in San Francisco. Born in 1870, Strauss initially focused on designing bascule (draw) bridges but later transitioned to suspension bridge design. His innovative techniques, along with his collaboration with architects and artists like Irving Morrow, contributed to the bridge’s iconic Art Deco style. Completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge is celebrated not just for its engineering excellence but also as a symbol of San Francisco and American ingenuity.
