Joseph Story

Joseph Story was an influential American jurist and legal scholar in the early 19th century. Born in 1779, he served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1811 to 1845. Story is notable for his contributions to constitutional law and his efforts to clarify legal principles. He authored important decisions that shaped American jurisprudence and wrote extensively on legal theory, including the widely used "Commentaries on the Constitution." Beyond the bench, he was a professor at Harvard Law School, where he helped educate future generations of lawyers. His work laid foundational ideas for modern U.S. law.
