Joseph's Syndrome

Joseph's syndrome, also known as X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP), is a rare genetic disorder primarily affecting men of Filipino descent. It causes progressive neurological problems, starting with involuntary movements (dystonia) and later developing symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease, such as slow movement and rigidity. The condition results from a mutation in a specific gene on the X chromosome, leading to degeneration of brain areas that control movement. Symptoms typically begin in adulthood and worsen over time, impacting daily activities. Currently, there is no cure, but treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
