Johannes von Staupitz

Johannes von Staupitz (1460–1524) was a German theologian and an influential figure in the early Protestant Reformation. He served as the vicar general of the Augustinian order and was a mentor to Martin Luther. Staupitz emphasized personal faith and the importance of a direct relationship with God, which helped shape Luther's theological views. He encouraged Luther to study scripture, leading to pivotal changes in Christian thought. Staupitz’s support and guidance were crucial during Luther's journey towards challenging the Catholic Church’s practices, which ultimately contributed to the Reformation's development.
