Jewish history in Lithuania
Jewish history in Lithuania dates back to the late Middle Ages, with a significant community developing by the 16th century. Lithuania became a center of Jewish cultural and religious life, home to renowned scholars and the Yiddish language. During the 19th century, Jewish nationalism and social movements flourished. However, the Holocaust devastated the community; approximately 90% of Lithuanian Jews were killed during World War II. Post-war, Jewish life in Lithuania declined, resulting in emigration and assimilation. Today, a small but vibrant Jewish community exists, working to preserve its heritage and history amidst a complex past.
