James II and VII
James II and VII was a 17th-century monarch who ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland as James II and Ireland as James VII, from 1685 until he was deposed in 1688. He was a Catholic king during a predominantly Protestant nation, which caused religious tensions. His attempts to promote Catholicism and increase royal authority alarmed many Protestants, leading to fears of absolutism. His reign ended with the Glorious Revolution, when he was overthrown and replaced by William and Mary. James's removal marked a shift toward constitutional monarchy in Britain, limiting royal power and increasing parliamentary influence.
