J-Pouch Surgery

J-Pouch surgery, also known as ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, is a surgical procedure typically performed on individuals with ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis. It involves removing the colon and rectum while creating a pouch from the end of the small intestine, which serves as a new reservoir for stool. This pouch is then connected to the anus, allowing for bowel movements. Patients often undergo this procedure to eliminate the need for a permanent colostomy bag, restoring more normal bowel function and improving quality of life. It typically requires several stages and careful post-operative management.
