Jōdo-shū
Jōdo-shū, also known as Pure Land Buddhism, is a Japanese Buddhist tradition founded in the 12th century by Hōnen. It emphasizes devotion to Amitabha Buddha (Amida Buddha), believing that sincere faith and recitation of his name can lead practitioners to rebirth in the Pure Land—a blissful, awakening realm—bypassing the cycle of rebirth and suffering. Jōdo-shū simplifies spiritual practice, focusing on devotion rather than complex rituals or meditation, making enlightenment more accessible to everyday people. Its aim is to achieve salvation through sincere faith and reliance on Amitabha’s vow to save all who call upon him.
