Isorhythm

Isorhythm is a musical technique that involves repeating a particular rhythmic pattern, regardless of the melody. This pattern, called "talea," is used alongside a fixed sequence of pitches, known as "color." Originating in the Medieval period, mainly in vocal music, isorhythm creates a sense of structure and tension as the rhythmic and melodic elements evolve independently. Composers like Philippe de Vitry and later, in the Renaissance, used isorhythm to build intricate musical textures, allowing for innovation in harmony and rhythm while still maintaining a cohesive overall sound.
