Iraqi invasion of Kuwait

The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait occurred in August 1990 when Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, accused Kuwait of overproducing oil and stealing oil through slant drilling, which hurt Iraq’s economy. Iraq also claimed Kuwait was historically part of its territory. Without warning, Iraq launched a surprise attack, quickly taking control of Kuwait’s government and oil fields. The invasion was condemned internationally, leading to a coalition of countries forming to push Iraqi forces out. The conflict ended in February 1991 with the Gulf War, restoring Kuwait’s sovereignty and leading to significant regional and global political repercussions.
