Iraq (UN Resolution 661)
UN Resolution 661 was adopted in 1990 to respond to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. It imposed strict economic sanctions, including a ban on trade and financial transactions, aiming to pressure Iraq to withdraw its troops without resorting to military force. The measure sought to protect Kuwait’s sovereignty and regional stability by limiting Iraq’s ability to generate revenue, especially through oil sales. These sanctions remained in place until Iraq complied with disarmament and withdrawal conditions, acting as a diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict peacefully while maintaining international law and security.
