Iodine Deficiency Disorder
Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) occurs when the body doesn't get enough iodine, an essential mineral needed to produce thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate metabolism, growth, and development. Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid gland enlarges in an attempt to capture more iodine, leading to a swelling called a goiter. IDD can also cause developmental delays in children, learning difficulties, and other health issues. It is most common in areas with iodine-poor soil and limited iodine intake from food. Ensuring an adequate intake of iodine-rich foods, like salt fortified with iodine, fish, and dairy, helps prevent this disorder.
