Intrathecal chemotherapy
Intrathecal chemotherapy involves delivering cancer-fighting drugs directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain. This approach allows medications to target cancer cells within the central nervous system more effectively, especially when they are hidden behind the blood-brain barrier that can block standard treatments. It is commonly used for cancers that have spread to the central nervous system or are at risk of doing so. The procedure is performed via a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and requires careful monitoring to minimize side effects and ensure precise delivery.
