An intraocular lens (IOL) is a small, artificial lens implanted inside the eye to replace the eye’s natural lens when it becomes cloudy or blurry, often due to cataracts. During a safe, common surgery, the cloudy lens is removed, and the IOL is inserted to restore clear vision. IOLs are custom-designed to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, often reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery. They are made from biocompatible materials and are durable, helping millions regain better sight and quality of life.
