intersex and medical community
Intersex refers to variations in sex characteristics, such as chromosomes, gonads, or genitalia, that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. These variations can be natural and occur in about 1.7% of the population. The medical community's approach to intersex individuals has evolved, moving from early interventions aimed at "normalizing" bodies to prioritizing informed consent and respecting individuals' identities. Today, many prioritize a patient-centered approach, providing support and information rather than unnecessary surgeries, emphasizing autonomy, well-being, and respecting intersex people's rights.
