Instrumentality

Instrumentality refers to the belief that a person’s efforts or actions will lead to desired outcomes or rewards, often in a workplace context. It is a component of motivation theories, particularly in expectancy theory, which suggests that motivation depends on the expectation that effort will result in performance, and that performance will lead to specific rewards. Essentially, if a person perceives high instrumentality, they believe that performing well will reliably bring about the benefits they seek, such as recognition, promotion, or other rewards.
