Indirect Speech Acts

Indirect speech acts occur when someone conveys a message without stating it explicitly, relying on context and shared understanding. For example, saying "Can you open the window?" is not just a question about ability but often a polite request for someone to open the window. The speaker's actual intention (a request) differs from the literal meaning of the words (asking about ability). This way of communicating allows for politeness and nuance, where the true intent is implied rather than directly expressed.
