Indian Mutiny
The Indian Mutiny, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Independence (1857-1858), was a major uprising against British rule in India. It began when Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army revolted due to grievances, including cultural insensitivity and harsh treatment. The rebellion quickly spread, involving various groups who opposed British domination. Although it was eventually suppressed, the mutiny marked a significant turning point, leading to the end of the East India Company's rule and the establishment of direct British governance in India, known as the British Raj.
