Indian Agriculture Act
The Indian Agriculture Act, enacted in 2020, aimed to reform the farm sector by allowing farmers to sell their produce directly to private buyers and outside government-controlled markets, with the intention of increasing competition and reducing middlemen. The laws also sought to promote contract farming and private investment. However, many farmers perceived these laws as threatening their protections and were concerned about potential exploitation and loss of control over their produce. The government argued that the reforms would modernize agriculture and improve farmers’ income, but the laws faced widespread protests and were eventually repealed in 2021.
