Impeachment Process

Impeachment is a formal process to remove a high-ranking government official, like the President, if they are believed to have committed serious misconduct or crimes. It begins in the House of Representatives, where members debate and vote on whether to charge the official with “impeachable offenses.” If a majority agree, the official is "impeached" or formally accused. The process then moves to the Senate, which holds a trial to determine if the official should be removed from office. A two-thirds Senate vote is required for removal. Impeachment does not automatically mean removal—it’s a constitutional check on executive power.
