Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was a U.S. federal agency responsible for overseeing immigration and citizenship processes. Established in 1933, it managed the admission of immigrants, visas, and naturalization for those seeking U.S. citizenship. In 2003, the INS was dissolved, and its functions were transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, which created three new agencies: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This restructuring aimed to improve efficiency and security in the immigration system.
