ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia)
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the United Nations in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Based in The Hague, Netherlands, the ICTY aimed to deliver justice for the victims and establish accountability for perpetrators. It was a pioneering effort in international law, setting precedents for future tribunals. The tribunal concluded its work in 2017, having indicted 161 individuals, helping to promote reconciliation and the rule of law in the region.
