Ibn al-Nafis was a 13th-century Arab physician and thinker known for his groundbreaking work in medicine. He is most famous for discovering the pulmonary circulation of blood, explaining how blood moves from the heart to the lungs and back. This challenged the prevailing medical views of his time, notably those of Galen. In addition to his contributions to medicine, Ibn al-Nafis was also a prolific writer in philosophy and literature. His work laid important foundations for later medical advancements and showcased the rich intellectual tradition of the Islamic Golden Age.
