hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome
Hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (hMDS) is a rare blood disorder where the bone marrow, responsible for producing blood cells, is underdeveloped and less active than normal. This results in fewer healthy blood cells—red cells, white cells, and platelets—leading to symptoms like anemia (fatigue), increased infections, and easy bruising or bleeding. Unlike other blood disorders, the marrow appears hypocellular, meaning it has many fewer blood-forming cells. The condition often occurs in older adults and can sometimes progress to more serious marrow diseases, including leukemia. Treatment options depend on severity and may include supportive care, therapies to stimulate blood production, or marrow transplantation.
