Hyperacute Rejection
Hyperacute rejection is a rapid and severe reaction that occurs immediately after a transplant, usually within minutes. It happens when the recipient's immune system recognizes the transplanted organ (like a kidney or heart) as foreign due to existing antibodies. These antibodies attack the transplanted tissue, leading to clots and rapid organ damage. This type of rejection is often preventable with careful compatibility matching prior to the transplant. Unfortunately, once it starts, hyperacute rejection is irreversible, and the transplanted organ must typically be removed to prevent harm to the patient.
