Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
The HPV vaccine protects against the human papillomavirus, a common virus transmitted through sexual contact. HPV can cause certain types of cancers, such as cervical, throat, and anal cancers, as well as genital warts. The vaccine works by prompting the immune system to recognize and fight specific HPV strains before exposure. It is typically given in multiple doses starting at ages 11-12 but can be administered to older teens and adults. Vaccination is a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of HPV-related health problems and is recommended as part of routine preventive healthcare.
