HSV-1

HSV-1, or herpes simplex virus type 1, is a common virus primarily causing cold sores around the mouth. After initial infection, it remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate later, often triggered by factors like stress or illness. While it mainly affects the lips and face, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected saliva or sores. Although there’s no cure, antiviral medications can help manage outbreaks and reduce transmission risk. Most people carry HSV-1 without symptoms, and the virus can be reactivated periodically throughout life.
