History of Disability
The history of disability reflects changing societal perceptions and treatment of individuals with disabilities. In ancient times, people with disabilities were often marginalized or seen as cursed. During the Middle Ages, they were sometimes cared for within religious institutions. The Enlightenment brought new ideas about human rights and inclusion. The 20th century saw increased advocacy and the push for rights, culminating in laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). Today, there is a focus on accessibility, empowerment, and recognizing the value of diverse abilities, moving towards a more inclusive society that celebrates differences.
