high-density lipoprotein

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is often called "good" cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from your bloodstream. HDL particles travel through your blood, collecting cholesterol from arteries and other tissues. They then carry it back to the liver, where it's processed and excreted. Higher levels of HDL are associated with a lower risk of heart disease because they help keep your arteries clear. Unlike other types of cholesterol, HDL's beneficial role is linked to its ability to protect your cardiovascular health by maintaining a healthy balance of cholesterol in your body.
