high-altitude balloons

High-altitude balloons are large, specialized balloons filled with a lighter-than-air gas like helium or hydrogen. They ascend into the upper atmosphere, reaching altitudes often above 20 kilometers (12 miles). Used for scientific research, weather monitoring, and technology testing, these balloons carry instruments and cameras to observe atmospheric conditions, cosmic radiation, or test equipment in near-space environments. Once their mission is complete, they usually descend back to Earth with a parachute, allowing recovery of the payload. They are a cost-effective way to gather data from the edge of space and are valuable tools for exploration and research.
