Hering-Breuer reflex

The Hering-Breuer reflex is a safety mechanism in the respiratory system that prevents over-inflation of the lungs. When the lungs expand too much during deep or rapid inhalation, sensors in the airways detect this stretch and send signals to the brain. In response, the brain temporarily stops the inhalation process and prompts the lungs to pause or switch to exhalation. This reflex helps regulate breathing patterns, ensuring lungs do not overexpand and maintain efficient gas exchange. It is especially active during deep breaths or vigorous activity, contributing to smooth, controlled breathing.
