Hearing is the process by which your ears detect sound waves that travel through the air. When sound waves reach the outer part of your ear, they are funneled into the ear canal toward the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates in response to these waves, and these vibrations are transferred through tiny bones in the middle ear to the cochlea in the inner ear. The cochlea converts these vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to your brain via the auditory nerve. Your brain then interprets these signals as recognizable sounds, allowing you to understand what you hear.
