Healthcare-associated infection (HAI)

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections that patients acquire while receiving medical care in hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare settings. They can occur from bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and often result from contact with contaminated surfaces, medical instruments, or healthcare workers' hands. HAIs can affect various parts of the body, such as the urinary tract, lungs, bloodstream, or wounds. Despite strict hygiene practices, they remain a concern because they can prolong hospital stays, increase healthcare costs, and pose serious health risks, especially to vulnerable patients. Preventing HAIs is a priority for healthcare facilities to ensure patient safety.
